In 2018, the UNESCO-listed Magoksa Temple Magoksa Temple,is the main temple of the 6th diocese of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. The temple site has long been called the “most blessed land of the East” and considered a propitious site. Magoksa Temple produced countless painter monks that it came to be called Nambanghwaso, or the Southern Painting Center. There is a painting of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva (Suwolbaegui-Gwaneumbosal) on the back of the wall behind the main Buddha statue inside the Daegwangbojeon Hall of Magoksa. This is one of the exemplary paintings demonstrating the history of Magoksa as a temple, carrying the legacy of painter monks including Geumho, Boeung and Ilseop.

Magoksa Natural Enviroment

The forests of Taehwasan Mountain are mostly comprised of conifers and oak trees.
There are forests of old pine trees, along the ridges and around the temple, and rows of cherry trees along Taehwacheon Stream that present a beautiful sight alongside the new sprouts every spring. For this reason, it has been described as “chun-magok-chu-gapsa,” meaning a temple of spring and autumn, to note its breathtaking scenery, especially in those two seasons. Of particular note, along the 5km hiking trail that passes through Hwarinbong and Nabalbong peaks and winds around Magoksa Temple, there are dense forests of red pine trees that are hundreds of years old.

Magoksa Kimgu Meditation Path

Magoksa Temple is also associated with Kim Gu, who was an independence activist during the late Joseon period. He was imprisoned at Incheon Prison for the murder of a Japanese military officer, who took part in the assassination of Empress Myeongseong. After escaping from prison, he found refuge at Magoksa Temple. He is one of the greatest heroes who most of Korean feel respect. There is a juniper tree that Kim Gu planted after Korea was liberated from the Japanese colonial rule.
You could experience the Korean Buddhism attraction and nice trekking in a beautiful nature.

1,500 years of Tombs of King Muyeong in the Ancient Tombs in Songsan-ri,

It is  widely known as the Royal Tombs of Baekje or the Tomb of King Muryeong. which is standing in the south of the Geumgang River and extending to a southeast direction. The first excavation of the Royal Tombs in Songsan-ri was conducted in 1927 and excavations were undertaken in 1932 illegally during the Japanese colonial period.

The Tomb of King Muryeong (UNESCO Heritage)

It was accidentally discovered during water drainage work on the Royal Tombs in Songsan-ri in 1971, leading to full-fledged archaeological excavation. The types of Baekje tombs discovered include the “stone chamber tomb with a corridor” and the “brick chamber tomb.” Tombs No.1 to No.5 are stone chamber tombs with a corridor and domed ceiling, which are the traditional type of Baekje tombs. Tomb No. 6 and the Tomb of King Muryeong are brick chamber tombs with a vaulted ceiling – a type of tomb that was popular in China during that period. These tombs were built after 475, the year of the capital’s relocation to Ungjin. The fact that all the tombs except for two were stone chamber tombs with a corridor suggests that the style and structure of a stone chamber tomb was well organized and established as an exclusive type of tomb for the royal family of Baekje kingdom.

Princess Seokjangri Gokbun, in search of origin

It is said to be the ruins of the Paleolithic period on the Kumgang River, and the Paleolithic period was born by mankind and is said to have been around 10,000 years ago. A variety of stonegis such as stamps, scratches, fist axes, and leaking clenched fists have been unearthed. Charcoal was found in the house of the late Paleolithy, which confirmed that it was a house dating from about 25,000 to 30,000 years ago, and that people knew they lived here at the time and may have lived in the postwar period. In addition, a survey of pollen revealed that there were various plants around the area, including pine, fir, magnolia, and lilies, which helped us understand the natural environment of the Paleolithes. It is an important historical site that tells us that people lived on the Korean Peninsula during the Paleolith.

Gongju Gongsanseong Fortress

It is a mountain castle which was established during the Baekje Kingdom (AC 234-678). The fortress is more than 2.6 kilometers long at 110 meters above sea level. Built using earthen fortifications during the Baekje dynasty, the fortress was strengthened during the Joseon dynasty with stones. There are many structures and relics left from the Baekje, Goryeo, and Joseon dynasties within the fortress. At the West and East entrances, visitors can enjoy a thick forest with the Geumgang River in the background. It is worth the visit for its historical and cultural significance, and also for the beautiful view of the Geumgang riverside and the walking trail. It was an important gateway to protecting the Gongju city as a baekje’s capital.
